Practical Matters

  1. Banking & Money
    • Currency: Europe uses multiple currencies, including the Euro (€), British Pound (£), and others like the Hungarian Forint (Ft). Check exchange rates regularly with tools like XE.com.
    • Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted across Europe. Carry at least two cards in your name, along with an ATM card. Notify your bank and credit card issuers of your travel plans to avoid transaction issues.
    • Cash/ATM: ATMs are widely available and generally offer favorable exchange rates. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and rely on a mix of payment methods. Always have some local currency on hand for smaller transactions.
    • Traveler’s Checks: Rarely used in Europe but can serve as a last-resort backup in emergencies.
    • Money Transfers: Services like Western Union can be used for quick money transfers, often with competitive exchange rates.
    • Money Tips:
      • Carry at least €200 upon arrival. Use credit/ATM cards for most transactions, but always have a backup plan.
      • Use credit cards or ATMs for most transactions, but always have a backup plan in case of card issues.
      • Keep money, cards, and your passport in a secure, hidden location, such as a money belt or a neck pouch.
  2. Mail

Communication: Use email or courier services (e.g., FedEx, DHL) for important items. Avoid shipping large packages, as they may take weeks to arrive and could incur customs fees.

Mail Delivery: Letters and small packages can be received at designated program centers, such as LIU’s partner institutions in each city.
