OFFICE OF SPONSORED RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS

OSR-SP contributes to the 91泡芙’s responsibilities for research, education and service by assisting College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty and students as they seek external support for their research and other programmatic activities. OSR-SP is responsible for pre- and post-award administration of grants and contracts awarded to College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB), 91泡芙 operates under a Federal Wide Assurance (FWA), #FWA00002562, approved by the Office of Human Research Protections. Human subjects research is defined as any systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge and collection of data from or about living human beings. As such, the University has authorized an Institutional Review Board (IRB) on the residential campus of LIU Brooklyn to convene monthly to review human subjects research IRB applications. IRB approved research projects are required to be reviewed on an annual basis. This review is confined solely to procedures affecting the rights and welfare of human subjects. No evaluation is made of the content or scientific merit of the project, unless subjects are found to be "at risk", at which time the risk/benefit ratio of the project will be evaluated. The review focuses on such issues as risk to subjects, voluntary participation, informed consent, and confidentiality.

Under the auspices of the University, the LIU Brooklyn IRB reviews and approves human subjects research submitted by LIU faculty, staff and students, as well as non-LIU researchers or users of University facilities. This IRB is charged with the responsibility of protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research, as mandated by the federal Office of Human Research Protection, (Department of Health and Human Services), the Food and Drug Administration, and the State of New York. Certain categories of research may be eligible for less intensive review procedures. Please see LIU IRB Application for Exempt Category Review for details.

Copies of all application forms and instructions can be obtained from, and when completed returned to the University IRB Administrator. All application questions should be answered as completely as possible and copies of informed consent forms, scripts, recruitment flyers, etc. should be appended. Additional information about meeting dates and application submission deadlines are available from the LIU Brooklyn chair, or from the University Office of Sponsored Research. Applications should be submitted at least two weeks before the scheduled meeting date to allow time for administrative review, photocopying, and distribution to committee members. Please remember to also include a copy of your human subjects research training certificate of completion received from NIH, CITI or the equivalent. Or, you can complete the free “Protecting Human Research Participants” training provided by NIH at .

INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE (IACUC), Brooklyn campus.

The IACUC oversees the care and use of animals in research, testing, and health sciences education at the Brooklyn Campus of LIU as described in the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Policy) and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide).The committee reviews all proposed and ongoing research protocols involving the use of live animals and ensures an adequate and proper record keeping and surveillance.

OFFICE of ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH and SAFETY. Chemical and Biological Safety programs are in place for all teaching and research laboratory facilities within the LIU Brooklyn and LIU Pharmacy. The campus Environmental, Health and Safety Manager provides occupational health and safety expertise, consultation and inspection services for the handling hazardous materials and to ensure campus compliance with government regulations. Safety trainings and standard operating procedures are provided to all students, staff, and faculty to ensure proper laboratory procedures and techniques are conducted in the facilities. Proper storage and usage of such hazardous materials are enforced through periodic laboratory inspections. Chemical and biological waste materials are properly disposed of by licensed and insured hazardous and regulated medical waste disposal contractors as directed by the campus EHS manager and as required by federal, state and local environmental regulatory agencies.
